Dougie Mittz

Dougie Mittz

Dougie Mittz is the embodiment Los Angeles tattoo style.  Apprenticed at the Pike in Long Beach at Bert Grimm’s World Famous the oldest tattoo shop in the U.S., and taught in the old ways of the art by the legend Rick Walters, Dougie learned to tattoo at the end of an era when tattooers machined their own tools and tattooed under the grizzliest of conditions.  But out of the early-century tradition of his mentors came the artistic breakthrough of East Los Angeles prison style tattoos of intricate and time consuming black and grey realism in the 1980s and 1990s.  During these revolutionary artistic times for the tattoo world, Doug was a young workhorse with sharp drawing skills and honed technical abilities.  It was the emergence of realistic portraits of Los Angeles culture from lowriders and hot babes to Virgin Mary and beloved grandparents that made this genre revolutionize the tattoo tradition that he gravitated to.  He was excited by the new art that was being developed within an old world and picked it up just at a time that gave him all the freedom to break free of his apprenticed background of traditional American flash.  With the work ethic and technique of the old ways and the artistic breakthroughs of the new ways, Doug has emerged as one of the most talented and seasoned tattooers in Los Angeles.  After learning from the best in his field at such highly respected shops as Shamrock Social Club and Tattoomania on the Sunset Strip, Rubes in Arcadia, and True Tattoo in Hollywood as well as working as a guest artist in the best shops across the world from Schiffmacher Veldoen in Amsterdam to Players Club in Huntington Beach, with such incredible shops as Sin Sin in Antwerp, Dan Sinnes in Luxembourg, and many other guest spots at countless amazing shops in between.  His talented execution of gorgeous realistic portraits of both people and objects as well as beautiful colorful work from traditional to scenic can be seen on his Instagram and to find him you can visit worldwide tattoo conventions such as London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Moscow, Honolulu, Long Beach or Dallas, or you can just stop by California Gold Tattoo in beautiful Silver Lake, Los Angeles.
